CHAMPAIGN – At least two people were injured in a shooting outside Market Place Mall in Champaign late Sunday afternoon.
Champaign police Chief R.T. Finney said officers were called to the west side of the mall at 4:47 p.m. after receiving a report of multiple shots fired there.
“When they got there, they found two individuals and one was shooting at the other,” Finney said, “and (police) returned fire.”
He said it appears that a police officer shot and hit at least one of those shooting. Finney said both of the people who were injured were taken away by ambulance.
“We have no motive for the shooting,” Finney said.
Finney said police have taken three or four other people into custody.
“We know that more than two people were involved in this,” Finney said. “Our best guess is we have the people who are responsible in custody or at the hospital.”
No officers were injured.
